New in Biosilico: Hydrophobic and Superhydrophobic Silica from Rice Husk

In 2019, BSB completed its final step in achieving 100% amorphous silica from rice husk. Aptly named Biosilic, this bio-based silica provides the equal, if not superior, functionality and versatility compared to fumed silica from sand or quartz.

While it is known that silica is Hydrophilic in nature, in August 2021, BSB achieved a significant milestone by converting this water-friendly nanoporous silica into Hydrophobic and then reaching a notch above it all by generating the Superhydrophobic range. Through a unique surface modification process, BSB has successfully developed Biosilico with different levels of hydrophobicity and Superhydrophobicity. This discovery has expanded the capability of converting an agricultural residue into customizable additives for applications in industries ranging from Paints & Coatings, Rubber & Plastics, Cosmetics, Agriculture, just to name a few.

The benefits of using Hydrophobic and Superhydrophobic silica industrially includes improved processability and rheological properties, water repellent properties, increased corrosion resistance, improved reinforcement and scratch resistance, as thixotropy agent and many more. With the Hydrophobic and Superhydrophobic characteristics, BSB’s Biosilico is now able to offer key properties such as anti-corrosion, anti-fouling, anti-icing, self-cleaning properties in the products it is added to.

This milestone of achievement provides a new frontier for BSB. At press time, BSB is actively conducting R&D programs on the various applications of Hydrophobic and Superhydrophobic silica so it can provide the necessary support to customers who use these rice husk based additives for their end-use products.
